EA Sports' blockbuster football series returns with Madden NFL 08. Madden NFL 08 focuses on "Weapons" in play events and gives players another way to create a dream season for themselves alone or in multiplayer competitions. The "Weapons" concept returns, and players can now locate dangerous players by reading weekly scouting reports, viewing player introductions and using trigger buttons before they lock in on the field. In total there are 24 different "Weapons", including Big Hitter, defensive linemen, running backs and catch receivers. Each "Weapon" has a counter-weapon that the player must uncover to eliminate a potentially destructive opponent. By completing mini-games in "Franchise" or "Owner" mode, players can change the attributes for each team member.

On the field there are a number of events, including hurdles, player celebrations and hot defensive routes. When an opponent prepares to reach the ball carrier's legs, players can stumble over them and avoid a fall. After the carrier has jumped over their opponent, they can head to the end zone for a touchdown and a celebration animation. Players can choose from 60 different signature moves, including Chad Johnson's "River Dance", Rex Grossman's "Gator Chomp" and Dante Hall's "X". In the trophy room, players can relive their victories by viewing awards for overtaking and passing records and multiplayer competitions. Additionally, gamers can now create various rings to earn while playing through the game.
