Pac-Attack is based on Namco's Japanese arcade puzzle game Cosmo Gang the Puzzle and resembles many block-drop puzzle games from that era, such as Puyo Puyo. The aim of the game is to place ghosts and then after three pieces (which can also contain one or two blocks) get Pac-Man to eat as many ghosts as possible in an attempt to clear the game field. The direction of Pac-Man is randomly chosen between left and right, but as he moves across the game field (after you've placed him, of course) and collides with a block or a "wall" on the game field, he will change direction. Like many block-dropping puzzle games, the game ends when a row of blocks and/or ghosts reaches the top edge. However, if you fill a counter on the left side of the game field, a fairy can appear that can remove about 6 or 7 rows of ghosts, but she only removes the ghosts, although the blocks that were on top of them fall. Like many other puzzle games, there is also a versus mode against another human player. It resembles the many versus modes of puzzle games: eat lots of ghosts and your opponent will get lots of ghosts on their field. The game also contains a puzzle mode. It consists of 100 levels where you must eat all ghosts with at least 4 Pac-Man (the number decreases in certain levels), and unlike the other modes, you can change the direction of Pac-Man with a button press. In all handheld versions (including Pac-Man Collection) the versus mode is missing.
