Description
Drakengard tells the story of a princeless prince named Caim, who fights for the Union against the Empire. Under the protection of the Union stand the Hierarchs and the Goddess, currently Caim's sister Furiae, who is a human manifestation of one of the four seals protecting the world from breaking apart. At the start of the game, Caim is fatally wounded in a battle with the Empire. When Caim encounters a captured Red Dragon, who is also close to death, he makes a fateful decision. In exchange for their lives, the Red Dragon and Caim form a pact. This pact will bind their lives together forever and connect their souls, at the cost of something irreplaceable. Charged with the fire of a dragon, Caim's revenge burns over the enemy...
The player controls Caim on his quest. The game is divided into three different modes: aerial combat, ground combat and event combat. In aerial combat, Caim rides on the dragon's back against a multitude of enemies in the air that spit fireballs (strong single shots and weaker multi-hit shots). The dragon is agile and can dodge incoming threats by turning completely around in an instant. In ground combat, the game is shown from a third-person perspective, mostly on large, open areas. While controlling Caim, his main ability is the use of a variety of weapons found on the battlefield. These are levelled up through continued use, and especially by killing individual enemies. Using magic (determined by the choice of weapon), timed attacks and dodges, Caim breaks through the enemy armies. Characters that Caim has recruited as allies can also be summoned during battles, continuously losing health until Caim regains control. In ground combat, Caim can also summon his dragon to ride on enemies from the air and attack them. The dragon's movements are generally the same as in aerial combat, but more limited and less agile. Event battles are similar to ground combat, but are shown isometrically, limited to a single weapon and without the help of a dragon. It is mainly used to tell story sequences.
Previously visited levels can become "expedition missions", which are optional and contain new objectives, enemies and weapons. In addition, any level previously played in the story can be revisited at any time. Depending on Caim's decisions (and the prerequisites for those decisions), there are five different endings to Drakengard.
