Description
Crazy Taxi is an arcade-style racing game in which the player takes on the role of a taxi driver weaving through a wild, frantic race across crowded streets, over pavements and even underwater to deliver passengers on time. The routes are mostly set in cities with heavy traffic and pedestrians (who can't be run over - they dodge out of the way). The main goal is to get as many customers to their destination on time as possible. Available customers are marked by circles, with the colour indicating the distance and the fare they're offering. Green means long rides worth a lot of money, while red means very short rides.
In the main Arcade mode, there's a timer that counts down quickly. It can be topped up by picking up customers. Reckless manoeuvres are encouraged while driving. Players can ignore all traffic rules, and customers offer extra tips for speeding and dangerous driving, though these can only be cashed in if the customer reaches their destination on time. Conversely, the reward at the end of a ride depends on the time remaining, since every customer also has a personal timer. The city is full of slopes and jumps, and the game uses a very loose driving model. The car can't be damaged, so it's advisable to drive as fast as possible. While driving, players can play with the gears to perform two special tricks: a crazy drift and a crazy boost to go faster.
Alongside Arcade mode, there is an Original mode and a Crazy Box, in which specific objectives must be achieved on enclosed courses. In the regular modes, it's possible to disregard the usual timer and play for a fixed number of minutes. At the end of the race, the player is awarded a licence, either D, C, B or A, with S for outstanding performance. In addition to the interactive courses from the arcade version, there is a new course for home consoles. There are four taxis and drivers to choose from. The cars have different stats and the drivers have different settings during the race. The game has a soundtrack featuring The Offspring and Bad Religion (not included in the Xbox 360 version).
