Description
Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z is a spin-off game in the Ninja Gaiden series. The player takes on the role of the ninja Yaiba, who was killed by Ryu Hayabusa, the series' usual protagonist. He is now revived by a company aiming to learn more about a zombie epidemic connected to Hayabusa. Yaiba also has a personal goal: to avenge his death. Unlike the previous games, this one is less serious, featuring absurd situations and humorous dialogue.
In terms of gameplay, this is a hack-and-slash game with the high difficulty typical of the series. Yaiba faces numerous enemies in melee combat and must take them down using his weapons (strikes with his short sword, a powerful attack with his robotic fist, or an area attack) and, above all, by building combos. This rewards players with the chance to perform a finishing move, which causes enemies to drop health points or short-lived weapons. Many enemies are element-based, which can be exploited — for example, manoeuvring an electric zombie so that it injures a fire zombie creates an electric storm. Further combos and passive bonuses can be unlocked once enough experience points have been collected. Alongside the combat, the player must also solve some environmental puzzles and survive acrobatic sequences in which Yaiba runs up walls and swings around. Timing is key here — pressing the right button at the right moment is essential to avoid death.
