Description

Lost Planet 2 takes place ten years after the events depicted in Lost Planet: Extreme Condition. Thanks to Wayne's actions, the planet E.D.N. III is no longer just a world of ice. Many areas have already dried out. Jungles with lush waterways have grown, and dry deserts full of sand have formed. But life on E.D.N. III is still far from easy. Although the heat is taking its toll on them, the Akrid still pose a serious threat. And NEVEC is working on a new evil plan, while the other factions wage a civil war over thermal energy. Although it is no longer necessary to survive the cold, thermal energy is still needed to power all the machines in the plant, and is therefore very valuable.

The campaign is divided into six episodes, in each of which the player takes on the role of a different faction. Even though the episodes initially seem to have no connection to one another, it quickly becomes clear that it is once again up to the player to save E.D.N. III. However, unlike in the first game, they no longer roam the levels alone. Instead, the campaign focuses entirely on a cooperative experience that allows up to four friends to join the fight for the planet. If no other players are available, the player can call on up to three bots to fight alongside them.

The basic gameplay remains the same as in the first game, meaning the player faces off against both the Akrid and other humans in a third-person shooter style, using various types of weapons, including machine guns, rocket launchers and different kinds of grenades – although only two weapons and one grenade type can be carried at once. The available weapons remain almost the same as in the first game, with only a few, mostly cooperative additions such as the shield. The player also once again has access to a short-range grappling hook, which can be used to climb buildings, walls and so on to overcome obstacles or gain an advantage over the enemy. In addition, Vital Suits, a type of mech, return in all sorts of forms, including one VS that allows three characters to ride and shoot at the same time.

While thermal energy (T-ENG) is no longer required to keep the body warm, it is still very useful for keeping the player alive. T-ENG automatically refills the health bar, slowly or more quickly, when the player activates the harmonizer. T-ENG can also be used to open chests scattered across the map, which mainly contain weapons. In addition, players can share T-ENG to keep friends alive even when their health is low. However, should the unthinkable happen, the player loses 500 combat points and respawns at the nearest data station. These must be activated via a quick-time event and not only serve as spawn points but also activate the minimap and provide a source of additional combat points. Once all combat points are used up, the game ends and the player must restart the entire section.

As the campaign progresses, the player unlocks additional customisation options for their multiplayer character, such as extra weapons, different armour or gestures, usually by using credits found scattered throughout the levels. However, instead of simply buying the items, the player must put their money into a one-armed bandit and hope it stops in the right position.

In addition to the co-op mode, the game also offers a traditional multiplayer mode for up to 16 players, including modes such as deathmatch, as well as a practice mode in which players must use all their skills to complete objectives in the fastest possible time and climb the online leaderboard.
