Description
Evolution's setting is the "Grid" system from TRON: Legacy in 1989, at exactly the point in time when the events in the film take place. Kevin Flynn, one of the main characters in both films, has recently discovered ISOs on the Grid; ISOs are programs that apparently created themselves and, beyond this remarkable trait, possess unique properties. While Flynn considers them a miracle, some regular programs on The Grid resent them, leading to clashes between the two groups of applications. To prevent a digital race war, he organises a ceremony at which the leader of the ISOs, Radia, is appointed co-system administrator alongside Clu, an improved version of a program Flynn used against the MCP in the first Tron film. As a security program named Anon, you are created to guard the ceremony and help Tron - the same program from the first film - maintain the Grid.
The game itself is played from the classic third-person perspective, similar to the Tomb Raider series. However, Anon - the player's character - is far more athletic than a typical character of this genre, and the player is able to travel through the Grid using Anon's "Free Runner" acrobatic techniques. The player attacks enemy programs mainly with their light disc, using either melee or ranged attacks. The disc can also be used to block other programs' attacks. Killing a program earns experience points, which can be used to upgrade the player's abilities. The game also includes sequences in which the player can pilot Light Cycles (as in TRON 2.0) and tanks (upgraded versions of the programs from the first film). Players using the PlayStation 3 version of the game can control the Light Cycle with the PlayStation Move controller, as if it were the bike's handlebars.
The game also features four multiplayer modes, all of which can accommodate up to 10 players simultaneously - Deathmatch (called "Disintegration" in the game), Team Deathmatch ("Team Disintegration"), "Domination-style" Deathmatch ("Power Monger") and "Bit Runner". Bit Runner is a cross between Capture The Flag and Domination. The level features a "Bit" program from the first Tron film. The player who grabs the Bit earns points for their team; the longer they hold it, the more points are scored. The team that holds the Bit the longest wins the game. However, the Bit gradually damages whoever is holding it, adding an extra layer of complication to the game. The game includes four Deathmatch maps, with more available for purchase via Disney Interactive. There are no co-op game modes.
