Description
Tony Hawk: Ride is a spin-off of the Tony Hawk skateboarding series. The game ships with a wireless peripheral device in the shape of a real skateboard, which is needed to play. Players stand on the board, and infrared sensors detect movement to control the in-game character. Instead of just turning, the game detects tilt for directional force, lifting the tail or nose (for manuals and ollies), and reaching down to mimic a grab, which is registered by separate sensors at the front and sides by blocking them with a hand. To push off, a leg is swept over the ground next to the board to gain speed. More complex tricks are performed by tilting and twisting the board. There are three difficulty levels for the game. On the lowest level, steering happens automatically and the player only has to perform jumps and tricks. On the higher difficulty levels, steering is turned off, as are aids such as guide lines.

The game consists of various environments that can be played in a free-skate mode in parks, or by completing missions in a campaign. The campaign takes place in cities around the world with various game modes. Some of the cities included are Barcelona, Chicago, Frankfurt, New York and Tokyo. There's a challenge mode in which specific goals must be reached. There are also game modes based on tricks and speed challenges, including skating in halfpipes. In a S.K.A.T.E. mode, similar to a H-O-R-S-E basketball game, players mimic each other's moves. Missions must be completed to progress in the game and unlock new regions.

At the start, you can create your own skater, and gradually new items and gear, as well as pro skaters, are unlocked. The controls are introduced through several training videos. While skating, a Style Meter fills up by performing several successful tricks in a row. When it's full, the moves are visually enhanced with effects. The game supports a competitive online multiplayer mode. Local multiplayer mode supports up to eight players taking turns. The Wii version doesn't offer online multiplayer, but does offer the ability to play as your own Mii. More
