Description
In the main career mode, eight environments (Asteroid Belt, Bonfire Beach, Mega Park, Mountain, Rooftops, School III, The Berrics and The Bunker) are visited with around 80 missions. Alongside the normal environments, the Asteroid Belt is an exotic location featuring a skatepark on an asteroid belt in space with a different form of gravity. The levels are not open-world, but are located in enclosed areas as in the series' first games. Completing tasks such as finding objects, performing certain tricks or collecting letters earns stars, which unlock new levels. To unlock a new level, at least fifteen stars must be earned in the previous level, as they cannot be accumulated. If all missions in a level are completed with the highest rating of "Sick" (three stars), the pro challenges are unlocked. The other ratings are "Am" (one star) and "Pro" (two stars), which are awarded depending on performance. Objectives include collecting the five SKATE letters or the five COMBO letters in an unbroken trick combo. Collectibles include VHS tapes, destructible loot crates and DVDs. In addition to these main objectives, there are secondary objectives, such as clearing a series of rings in a short time, keeping the tricks going to prevent the skater's head from exploding, collecting ice cream, lighting torches with a burning skateboard, or pushing beach balls out of a swimming pool.
Completing levels earns stat points, which are used to improve the skater multiple times in various categories: Grind, Lip Trick, Manual, Ollie, Speed, Special, Spin and Vert. Completing challenges offers new aesthetic options to customise the skaters. Skaters chain together tricks and combos with flips, manuals, ollies, grinds, grabs, plants, aerial moves and more. A meter fills up through successive, uninterrupted moves, and once it is full, new special moves become available, replacing the standard tricks. Completely new is the slam technique, which lets skaters instantly crash in mid-air. In multiplayer mode, only available on PS4 and Xbox One, up to 20 skaters can compete against each other in a single level. Free skating always takes place online. Players then start offline missions and leave free skating mode, or join a lobby to challenge the other skaters. In a special mode, more unrealistic tricks are available and more visual effects are added to the skaters' movements.
