Description
The Walking Dead: Season Two continues the story of The Walking Dead and is based on the comics of the same name (not the TV series). Everyone becomes a zombie, called a "walker", after death (at least if the brain is still intact), and the series follows people as they try to survive. Just like the source material, the game is less about fighting zombies and more about showing how the survivors react to their situation and interact with one another.
Apart from a short intro section, the story takes place over a year after the events of the first game. Clementine initially travels together with Omid and Christa, but due to unfortunate circumstances soon has to survive alone and find new people she can trust. The player takes on the role of Clementine, but in terms of gameplay - with the obvious difference that the girl isn't as strong as the previous protagonist Lee, who is more often on the defensive - the mechanics remain largely unchanged compared to the predecessor.
One of the main pillars of the game is making decisions: in each episode there are many decisions to make that affect the further course of the game; the consequences can range from small to large (e.g. the death or survival of other characters). These decisions, including Clementine's responses during conversations, must be made within a time limit. The game also reacts to some decisions made in the first game if a savegame is imported.
Sometimes Clementine has the opportunity to explore a small area and interact with objects or people in order to reach her next goal or simply learn more about the situation. The game relies on a mix of direct movement of the character and selecting an object with the cursor: hovering the mouse pointer over an object brings up a list of possible actions (e.g. looking at the object, picking it up, or using another item in Clementine's possession). Compared to the predecessor, however, the puzzle aspect has been completely removed; it's now just about interacting with all the required objects and people. The frequent action sequences take the form of quick-time events (the player has to press or hammer the buttons shown on screen under time pressure, or click the correct spot on the screen); in other cases there are minigames of similar complexity to solve.
The other four episodes were released separately as DLC (downloadable content) or as part of a season pass for this version:
- The Walking Dead: Season Two - Episode 2: A House Divided
- The Walking Dead: Season Two - Episode 3: In Harm's Way
- The Walking Dead: Season Two - Episode 4: Amid the Ruins
- The Walking Dead: Season Two - Episode 5: No Going Back
