Description
Each episode consists of eight chapters. The five episodes are:
- The Walking Dead: Episode 1 - A New Day
- The Walking Dead: Episode 2 - Starved for Help
- The Walking Dead: Episode 3 - Long Road Ahead
- The Walking Dead: Episode 4 - Around Every Corner
- The Walking Dead: Episode 5 - No Time Left
The game is set in the United States at the start of a zombie outbreak. It takes place in the original universe but does not draw on characters or locations from the comics or the TV series. Instead, a parallel story is told through a new character, Lee Everett, though some original comic characters such as Glenn and Hershel make cameo appearances throughout the series. The main character, Everett, was a professor at the University of Georgia who was convicted of murder after coming home one day to find his wife cheating on him. In a fit of rage, he killed the man and was convicted for it. At the start of the game, Everett is being transported to prison, but the car crashes, allowing him to escape. His main concern now is to flee from the zombies, and he plans a trip to Macon, where his parents and brother live. He soon meets a young girl named Clementine, whose house has been overrun by zombies, and takes her along. After that, he meets many more characters and travels to various locations. Much of the game revolves around the emotional bond with Clementine and how Everett chooses to carry her through the hostile environment.
It plays as an adventure game with action and role-playing elements. In many sequences, the character can look around the environment freely and interact with objects. Compared to Telltale's previous title Jurassic Park: The Game, there is somewhat more freedom of exploration and more traditional adventure elements, such as examining objects, storing them in an inventory, and applying them within the environment. Many of the action sequences are shown as cinematic sequences or through quick-time events, requiring the player to act quickly. If they are not carried out in time, the character dies, and often Everett also has the option to save characters or let them die at the hands of the zombies. There is a rewind feature that allows you to return to any of the eight chapters of an episode to choose a different option, without having to replay the entire episode. There are sequences with a stealth mechanic, in which Lee can act for a short window of time and then must retreat before being spotted and killed. While exploring, various icons indicate actions such as examining, interacting with, or using an object. Inventory items also appear here, which the player must interact with or combine before being able to use them.
During conversations, there are several options that can change the outcome of events. During a conversation option, a timer runs down, and if no option is chosen, one is selected by default. At the start of the game, you can choose between two display modes. "Standard" shows more of the user interface and helps with important decisions, while "Minimal" turns off UI hints, aids, and choice notifications. The setting can also be changed during the game. Key decisions made during events and conversations are saved and carried over into the following scenes and episodes. Each episode ends with a cliffhanger, a preview of the next episode, the credits, and an overview of the key decisions, showing how they compare as percentages to the choices made by all other players worldwide. A new episode begins with a flashback to previous events, into which the player's choices are dynamically woven. The title is significantly darker than Telltale's earlier games and includes profanity and brutal killings, but the focus is on the moral choices and consequences within a violent environment.
