The game was built from the ground up with a new physics engine and features a new control scheme known as "Reflex", hence the title. The result is improved handling, your freestyle tricks are easier to pull off, and you can use both joysticks on the controller.
Also new to Reflex is terrain deformation, which shapes the track during the race, causing rutted tram lines to form, clumps of mud to litter the track, and some areas to become smoother than others. As a result, handling varies depending on which racing line you choose.
Online offers races for up to 12 players, private matches as well as public matches in the form of online or local system play. The competitive multiplayer modes are Tag and Snake. In "Tag", one player is "It" and the other players must chase them; whoever catches them becomes "It". In "Snake", each player leaves a "snake" behind as they move. Riding over these snakes eliminates you from the round. Other game modes include waypoint races and a free-ride mode.
