Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Danger of the Ooze is based on the 2012 Nickelodeon TV series. The game sends the four Ninja Turtles out to stop a canister of super mutagen from falling into the hands of Shredder and his cronies.
The game, which uses 3D polygon graphics for 2D side-scrolling gameplay, is a combination of "Metroidvania"-style exploration platformer and beat 'em up. The turtles' quest takes them through a vast, interconnected world ranging from the sewers to the streets of New York City and the TCRI building, all the way to Dimension X. As is typical for the genre, only a small part of the world is accessible from the start. New abilities or items must be unlocked or found in order to reach new areas.
Standing in the turtles' way are various goons, ranging from Foot Clan bots to Mouser droids to Kraang soldiers. It is possible to switch between the four turtles at any time. They all use their signature weapons and have a slightly different fighting style and moves. The basic moves are simple attacks and blocks. If you land a hit combo and then press the attack button again, the turtle's weapon spins. Pressing a direction afterwards triggers a "Shell Kicker" - a particularly powerful move that can knock away an opponent's shield, knock them back, deal extra damage, or place the turtle behind the opponent. Defeating enemies earns experience points, which can be used to upgrade the "Shell Kicker" attacks. When a turtle is defeated, it is captured by the enemy, and it is possible to bring it back into the game by rescuing it from captivity.
New abilities are gained by finding power-ups or by meeting allies such as April or Casey in the story sequences. These include double jumps and long jumps, as well as the ability to throw various types of shuriken or smoke bombs, which allow the turtles to gain access to new areas. There are also health upgrades in the form of pizza boxes (for higher maximum health) or pizza pies and slices (for refilling health).
There are several boss fights against characters such as Rahzar, Baxter Stockman and, of course, Shredder. The voice actors from the TV series reprise their roles in the game.
