Sengoku Basara: Samurai Heroes is the third instalment in the series known to English-speaking audiences as Devil Kings. The game resembles a more arcade-oriented version of Dynasty Warriors, albeit much more exaggerated and in an anime style. The game also serves as a prequel to the plot of the anime series.

More than a dozen leaders are available to choose from, each with their own unique weapon and fighting style. Each character also has their own story in Hero Story Mode, with several paths depending on which locations the player wishes to conquer. Winning a battle not only advances the story but also levels up the character, using the experience gained in battle as well as bonus experience for special requirements or secrets discovered on the battlefield. Higher levels not only lead to better stats but also cause the characters to gain new abilities. New weapons, items, accessories, allies and resources are also awarded. Various accessories can be crafted from resources, making heroes and their weapons stronger.

There's also a quick battle mode that lets players replay any battlefield they've already visited. The selectable characters and discovered items are universal and interact with each other, so any items or levels earned in one mode carry over seamlessly to the other. Both modes also support split-screen action for two players.
