Perry Our Man in Space #83
Comic: Perry #83Language: German
Publisher: Moewig Comics
Year: 1971
Condition: 2-3 (Two to three) fine
Perry #83 is a classic science fiction comic from Moewig Verlag, based on the successful pulp novel series Perry Rhodan. The cover and back cover are by Johnny Bruck, who also shaped the pulp novel series with his cover art. The comic is in used condition with water damage in the top right corner.
The comic series Perry was published by Moewig Verlag between 1968 and 1975, running for a total of 129 issues. This science fiction comic was the publisher's comic adaptation and, after Perry Rhodan im Bild (1967-1968), the second attempt to translate the famous pulp novel source material into the comic medium. The series had the casual and reassuring subtitle Our Man in Space and soon developed into a flashy, colourful pop-art comic that appealed more to young adults than to children. The artistic design was handled by the Italian graphic studio Giolitti, and the majority of the drawings were straightforward copies from a wide variety of American comic books of the time. Panels from Marvel Comics in particular were shamelessly copied, above all those by John Buscema, whose drawings were repeatedly used as templates. Nevertheless, the Perry series has its own special charm, especially because it is a typical phenomenon of its era and, as such, still comes across as lovingly nostalgic today. Most of the covers were designed by Moewig's in-house artist Johnny Bruck (1921-1995), who also shaped the visual identity of the source material - the pulp novel series Perry Rhodan. For sales strategy reasons, the publisher apparently found it important to maintain at least a visual unity on newsstand racks.
