Description
Abe is a Mudokon, a member of a once-prosperous race that has now been enslaved by the Glukkons and forced to work in their vast corporations. The food factories have discovered a new type of meat that everyone loves, although no one knows the recipe. Following his stomach, Abe eavesdrops on the corporate executives' conversations and makes the most horrifying and disgusting discovery: his own race is this secret, delicious food.
Unfortunately, Abe is discovered and the guards march towards him. He has to flee, but he can't leave his friends to the mercy of the Glukkons and their henchmen. He must save as many as he can and tell the world the truth about what he's discovered.
Abe's Oddysee is the first game set in the fictional Oddworld universe. It's a platformer with puzzle-solving elements that focuses on portraying a weak, feeble character in a bleak and hostile world, who must rely on his cunning to outwit enemies and overcome dangers. Abe is almost completely helpless: he can't use weapons and is usually killed instantly by his brutal enemies if he confronts them directly. For this reason, most of the game consists of careful exploration, precisely timed movements, sneaking around and outsmarting enemies through various means: throwing rocks to distract them, luring them into traps, and so on. Abe can run, jump, climb, tiptoe, crouch and roll; in most areas, these actions are essential for his survival. In some stages, Abe rides a large creature called an Elum.
Abe's only special ability is singing, which he can use to stun certain enemies for a while or possess them. When Abe possesses an enemy, he gains its abilities: for example, if the player possesses the body of a wild Slig, they can fire its machine gun, communicate with other creatures of its kind, and even commit suicide, clearing the way for Abe.
Singing is also used to open "bird portals". This is the final action required to bring another Mudokon to safety. Before that, Abe must locate his enslaved friends and lead them out of the hostile environment using a communication method called "GameSpeak". GameSpeak is a form of verbal communication using simple commands mapped to various phrases, such as "Hello", "Follow me", "Wait here" and so on. It can also be used to remember passwords given to Abe by other Mudokons in certain areas. Many areas where Abe can rescue Mudokons are hidden and not required to complete the game. However, the game's ending depends on the number of Mudokons the player has saved.
The game features pre-rendered background graphics and uses CG movies in a similar style to advance the story between levels.
