Description
Homefront depicts a scenario in which the United States has lost its status as a global superpower and is invaded by a unified Korea in 2027. The player controls Robert Jacobs, a former military pilot who is drafted by the Korean army and then freed by a local resistance cell. Jacobs is now on the run and has no choice but to support the resistance, which is trying to link up with remnants of the US Army outside San Francisco. Homefront was written by John Milius, the screenwriter behind Red Dawn and Apocalypse Now.
The single-player campaign follows Jacobs and three resistance fighters through guerrilla attacks and an attempt to escape the walled city of Montrose, Colorado. The gameplay closely follows the Modern Warfare series, using snap-targeting, iron-sight aiming and an identical control scheme. The player carries two weapons at a time, and weapons dropped by enemies come with random attachments and scopes. The most unique aspect of Homefront's combat revolves around the robotic attack vehicle “Goliath”. At several points in the game, the player will use a target indicator to direct the otherwise autonomous Goliath to fire on specific enemies or tanks. The single-player campaign was frequently criticised on release for its unusually short length.
The multiplayer mode combines elements of the fast-paced infantry combat from the Modern Warfare series with vehicle combat, similar to Frontlines: Fuel of War. Players earn XP during matches, which stays with their character and increases their overall rank. Similar to Counter-Strike, players also earn “Battle Points” during matches, which can only be spent within that match on new weapons, upgrades and vehicles. A unique multiplayer mode for Homefront is “Battle Commander”, in which players are guided by an overseeing AI Commander. Players are automatically assigned objectives, including specific enemy players they can hunt down and kill. Achieving objectives increases the player's notoriety, leading to more important missions, greater support from their own AI Commander, and increased attention from the enemy Commander.
The multiplayer mode supports up to 32 players (in two teams of 16) on consoles and PC. Multiplayer also requires redeeming a “Battle Code”, which is provided free with new copies of the game or can be purchased separately - identical to EA's online pass system.
