Description
Dragon Age II is a sequel to Dragon Age: Origins.
One of the key events at the start of the first game was the destruction of the village of Lothering by the Darkspawn. However, we were not told that there was at least one person who survived the attack: a human named Hawke. As a refugee, Hawke travels to an area known as the Free Marches - specifically to the city of Kirkwall. Hawke's family shares the fate of many other Ferelden refugees; the authorities of Kirkwall are wary of the newcomers, and the path to financial stability is anything but easy. Meanwhile, the appearance of the mysterious Qunari race brings even more trouble to the inhabitants of Kirkwall, as does the growing tension between the Templars and the mages. Hawke is caught in the middle of these political and social conflicts - which path should the hero take?
Dragon Age II uses a "framed narrative format": the story is told over a decade later by one of Hawke's companions. Similar to Alpha Protocol, the narrative is quite flexible; motivations and events vary depending on the moral choices the player makes during the game. The game also adopts the "wheel-based" dialogue system from the Mass Effect games: short responses reflecting the different tones and attitudes the player wants to choose for Hawke. Again, similar to Mass Effect, the race and name of the main character cannot be changed; however, everything else (appearance, gender, classes) can be freely customised.
The combat system is quite similar to the one used in the previous Dragon Age game (which in turn traces back to the combat style of Baldur's Gate), but has been significantly sped up. Hawke can only be a human, but the player can customise his appearance and character class (Warrior, Mage or Rogue). The player controls Hawke and up to three active party members, either by "programming" their actions - assigning actions to be carried out under certain conditions (e.g. healing a party member if their HP falls below 20%) - or by giving each character manual commands. The skill tree is also similar; the player can learn new abilities as the characters level up. Many abilities from the first game return, though some are missing or replaced by new ones. Abilities are divided into different disciplines corresponding to the character's combat style.
