Description
In BioShock Infinite, the player takes on the role of detective Booker DeWitt, who is forced to find a young woman, Elizabeth, in order to settle his debts. She is being held captive in the floating city of Columbia, in an alternate version of 1912. During his travels, Booker encounters various factions within the city fighting against each other. The Founders want Columbia to remain a city only for pure-blooded Americans, while the Vox Populi believe the city should be open to everyone. The setting is based on the idea of exceptionalism, combined with strong religious doctrine and open racism. Elizabeth is a key figure in this conflict and has a mysterious origin, including her powers to create tears in the fabric of space-time and expose parallel universes. Booker and Elizabeth stay together for most of the game, and she acts independently. She doesn't need to be defended, throws Booker ammunition and silver eagle coins, and can be asked to pick locks. They are hunted by the spiritual leader Comstock and his troops, along with the giant mechanical songbird.
The game uses similar gameplay styles and mechanics to previous BioShock games. Vigors grant the player superpowers to do a variety of things, such as sending out a flock of crows to pick off enemies, or charming enemies to defend you. Another option is possession, which is used to take over people or machines and turn them temporarily into allies. Once the effect wears off, possessed people commit suicide. Most powers can be used in several ways, either as a direct attack or as a much stronger trap waiting to be triggered. Booker can also be upgraded with permanent bonuses through four types of gear, similar to the gene tonics in previous games. Different types can be equipped depending on the situation. The typical FPS weapons can be found throughout the game, such as pistols, shotguns and rifles. One of the most notable weapons is the Sky-Hook, which can be used as a melee weapon to take out an enemy. Money can be exchanged for upgrades and consumables at vending machines. Items are found by looting barrels, desks and enemies. Vigors can only be used once enough salt has been collected. The three main bars visible on screen (health, salt and shield) can be expanded by finding and using infusions. The story is also advanced through optional Voxophones (audio logs) and Kinetoscopes (film projectors).
Skylines offer a unique way to get around the world. Using the Sky-Hook, the player can attach themselves to these lines and glide quickly in one direction or the other. These can be used to escape overwhelming situations or to reach higher areas and gain an advantage in combat.
