Warriors Orochi 3 is the third instalment in the Warriors Orochi series and the sequel to Warriors Orochi 2.
After the victory over Orochi, a time of peace returned to the land. This peace is suddenly disturbed by the appearance of a hydra. Warriors from different worlds gather to bring forth the hydra, but only three survive. With the help of the mystical Kaguya, Sima Zhao, Ma Chao and Hanbei Takenaka set off on a journey through time to save their fallen comrades and build an army against the new threat.
At the start of the game, the player only has four characters available to recruit warriors by changing the outcome of various battles. The characters consist of figures from the Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors series, as well as some from other games such as Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive.
Before each phase, the player selects three warriors. In battle, these characters can swap places at any time to fight against hordes of enemy soldiers and officers, earning experience and gems along the way, until the victory conditions are met. Weapons and items can also be acquired during battle. Between battles, the player is sent back to camp, where they can buy and customise weapons, bond characters together, equip them, and distribute growth points to raise a character's level. When certain conditions are met, discussions between specific warriors unlock new sections or an alternative "Redux" version of a previously completed battle.
