Le Tour de France is a cycling game that covers the most significant professional cycling stage race, the Tour de France. It is largely similar to its predecessor, and the player takes control of a single athlete.
The rider, who takes on one of the typical cycling roles, moves forward automatically, and the player only steers gently in the general direction and controls changes in speed (braking and attacking). Most important, however, is energy management - trying to build up a quick lead is useless if the rider is exhausted after half the stage. There is also the option to communicate with other athletes on the same team to coordinate tactical manoeuvres. The player doesn't have to ride the entire Tour themselves; some sections per stage can be simulated by the AI based on parameters the player has previously set.
The main innovations compared to the predecessor are a refined AI, more interactions with teammates, some changes to the user interface, graphical improvements and a multiplayer mode. Here, two players compete against each other over the final kilometres of a stage; the starting situation depends on the athletes used.
