Description
Tony Hawk: Ride is a spin-off of the Tony Hawk skateboarding series. The game comes with a wireless peripheral in the shape of a real skateboard, which is required to play. Players stand on the board, and infrared sensors detect movement to control the character. Instead of just turning, the game detects tilting for directional force, lifting the tail or nose (for manuals and ollies), and reaching down to mimic a grab, which is registered by separate sensors at the front and sides by blocking them with one hand. To push off, one leg is swept along the ground next to the board to gain speed. More complex tricks are performed by tilting and twisting the board. There are three difficulty levels for the game. At the lowest level, steering happens automatically and the player only has to perform jumps and tricks. In the higher difficulty levels, steering is switched off, as are aids such as guide lines.

The game consists of various environments that can be played in a free skating mode in parks or by completing missions in a campaign. The campaign takes place in cities around the world with various game modes. Some of the cities included are Barcelona, Chicago, Frankfurt, New York and Tokyo. There is a challenge mode in which specific objectives must be achieved. There are also game modes based on tricks and speed challenges, including skating in halfpipes. In an eS-Ride mode, similar to a game of H-O-R-S-E in basketball, players mimic each other's moves. To progress in the game and unlock new regions, missions must be completed.

At the start, players can create their own skater, and new items, equipment and pro skaters are gradually unlocked. Controls are introduced through several training videos. While skating, a style meter fills up by performing several successful tricks in a row. Once it is full, moves are visually enhanced with effects. The game supports a competitive online multiplayer mode. Local multiplayer supports up to eight players taking turns. The Wii version does not offer online multiplayer, but does offer the option to play as your own Mii.
