Description
In the main career mode, players visit eight environments (Asteroid Belt, Bonfire Beach, Mega Park, Mountain, Rooftops, School III, The Berrics and The Bunker) across around 80 missions. Alongside the normal environments, the Asteroid Belt is an exotic location featuring a skatepark on an asteroid belt in space with a different form of gravity. The levels aren't open-world, but instead take place in enclosed locations as in the series' early games. Completing tasks such as finding objects, performing certain tricks or collecting letters earns stars, which unlock new levels. To unlock a new level, at least fifteen stars must be earned in the previous level, as they cannot be carried over. If all missions in a stage are completed with the highest rating of "Sick" (three stars), the Pro challenges are unlocked. The other ratings are "Am" (one star) and "Pro" (two stars), awarded depending on performance. Objectives include collecting the five SKATE letters or the five COMBO letters in an unbroken trick combo. Collectibles include VHS tapes, breakable loot crates and DVDs. Alongside these main objectives, there are secondary objectives, such as clearing a series of rings in a short time, keeping tricks going to stop the skater's head from exploding, collecting ice cream, lighting torches with a burning skateboard, or pushing beach balls out of a swimming pool.
Completing levels earns stat points, which are used to upgrade the skater multiple times across various categories: Grind, Lip Trick, Manual, Ollie, Speed, Special, Spin and Vert. Completing challenges unlocks new cosmetic options for customising skaters. Skaters chain together tricks and combos with flips, manuals, ollies, grinds, grabs, plants, aerial moves and more. Consecutive, unbroken moves fill up a meter, and once it's full, new special moves become available that replace the standard tricks. Completely new is the slam technique, which lets skaters bail into the air instantly. In multiplayer mode, available only on PS4 and Xbox One, up to 20 skaters can compete against each other in a single level. Free skating always takes place online. Players then start offline missions and either leave freeskate mode or join a lobby to challenge the other skaters. A special mode offers more unrealistic tricks and adds more visual effects to the skaters' movements. More
