Description
The Saboteur is a GTA-like open-world driving and action game set in Paris during the Second World War. The player takes on the role of Sean and looks over his shoulder as he explores the city and its surroundings either on foot or by car. To advance the story, the player must complete missions for the Resistance. There are also a considerable number of side missions and many other things to do in the city, including – but not limited to – blowing up sniper towers and Nazi tanks and killing Nazi generals. These so-called acts of sabotage also earn the protagonist Contraband, the game's currency. With it, he can buy weapons, upgrades and other items from the black market dealers scattered throughout the city.

To carry out these acts of sabotage, the player has access to various types of period-appropriate weapons and explosives, as well as Sean's fists for close combat. Although Sean can fight the Nazis in melee with punches, kicks and holds, it's often not advisable to go straight into combat, since he must escape the Nazis once an alarm has been triggered in order to complete his missions. The alert level also rises over time as Sean inflicts additional damage on Nazi property and personnel, alerting even heavier forces such as tanks and zeppelins. To evade an alarm, he must either quickly leave a certain area or enter one of the many hideouts without being seen.

After completing a certain mission, Sean can also call resistance fighters to his side, who either help him in combat or bring him a getaway car. These getaway cars must first be collected by driving them into a black market garage. Once this is done, the car can be summoned at any workshop.

Through his actions, the player also unlocks perks that grant certain rewards, such as ‘Sucker Punch’, earned by killing ten enemy soldiers without them noticing. Sean can even slip into an enemy uniform to infiltrate the Nazis undetected; however, if he's seen engaging in suspicious activity, an alarm will be triggered after a certain time. Other standout activities include running and climbing on buildings, similar to the protagonist of Assassin's Creed, giving the player the freedom to choose their own path to the objective.

At the start of the game, Paris and its surroundings are rendered in black and white, in a style very similar to the film Schindler's List, with only certain colours standing out, such as the red in every Nazi symbol and the yellow lights behind the windows. As the player helps the Resistance liberate sectors, colour returns and Nazi activity decreases.
