Blackhand Edition and The Don's Edition were developed in parallel and improve upon the original game.
It features a revamped crew system, in which members accompany the player even after loading a game (which had hired a different crew). During missions, a 4-man hit squad can be called in, based on a meter that needs to be charged up.
In addition to the Enforcer role from the original game, these versions offer an additional path as an Operator, which relies mainly on extorting the FBI, cops or families, portrayed as a mini-game. While the Enforcer destroys the other families through brute force, the Operator must gather dirt on them. This can be used by talking to the police chiefs of the five districts to raise the bribery meter to the maximum, eventually allowing the player to take control of the police in the area and fight alongside their family members. The police can also arrest other characters. The Operator's special abilities include improved and regenerating health, reduced prices for bribing the FBI and police, increased damage and improved crew health, calling in the hit squad twice as often, and instant kills by planting car bombs.
In addition to the 20 regular missions, this edition includes 10 new ones, including a new rival family, rooftop battles, new favours and various forms of extortion and bribery.
The motion-based controls are supported by SIXAXIS (PS3) and, to a greater extent, by the Nunchuk and Wiimote (Wii) during combat and for execution moves such as chokeholds, headbutts, throws, swinging bats, jabs and throwing Molotov cocktails.
The PS3 edition includes 2 locations not found in the other versions: a cargo ship and a rail yard with additional missions.
