Description
As the game progresses, the player travels from planet to planet, hunting down all remaining Jedi for Darth Vader. Each location (the scrapyard planet Raxus Prime, the densely forested Kashyyyk, the organic fungal region of Felucia and other surprise areas) has new enemies that require different Force powers to defeat, so the player gains access to them at the start of each new level. For example, most enemies on Raxus are mechanical, so the player learns Force Lightning at the start of the level to exploit this. In addition to the Force powers, the player can acquire various Force combos via the customisation screen, combining lightsaber moves with Force powers and even featuring multiple grab moves. All of these abilities can be upgraded in the customisation screen, which also offers options for optimising the lightsaber and choosing different costumes.
The game rewards the player for defeating enemies in flashy ways, using Force powers and the environment rather than simply hacking away with the lightsaber. Depending on how enemies were defeated, the player receives different "bonuses" - for example, a "Crush Bonus" for hurling an enemy into a piece of the environment (and subsequently destroying it), or a "Long Way Down Bonus" for sending an enemy flying off a cliff. These bonuses increase the player's Force points, which function like experience points for levelling up. Once a level-up is reached, the player receives combo, talent and ability spheres, which can be spent in the aforementioned customisation screen to gain new abilities and improve attack- and defence-related stats. In addition, the game employs an "action camera" when enemies are defeated in particularly brutal ways, briefly interrupting gameplay to show an opponent plunging to their death.
The Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of Force Unleashed are the first games to use LucasArts' Ronin engine, which combines the Havok physics engine, Natural Motion's Euphoria AI and Pixelux's Digital Molecular Matter (DMM), causing enemies to react with fluid animations and self-sustaining AI (e.g. clinging to ledges and dodging projectiles) and environmental objects to bend, stretch and shatter depending on their material properties. The versions for other platforms simulate these effects but do not include the actual modules.
