SingStar - Boxed - PS3

SingStar is a karaoke game in which the player(s) sing along to a music video. The basics are still the same: the player(s) sing into a microphone and the game awards points for performance. The only scoring criterion is whether the right note is hit at the right time; the words sung or the octave make no difference.

The main difference to earlier SingStar editions is that the karaoke application itself can be downloaded for free. However, it is not possible to use it (apart from a few short trial songs) without buying songs via microtransaction.

While it is still possible to use an old microphone sold alongside earlier SingStar editions, it is designed for use with a smartphone. By downloading an external app (compatible with Android or iOS), it becomes a microphone.

Originally, most of the multiplayer modes known from earlier instalments were removed in this version. The only modes available were fighting another player (local) or sending a high score to a friend to beat (online). Party mode returned in a later update (December 2015) with five game modes: Pass the Mic (players take turns singing parts of the song) and Pass the Medley (players take turns singing the chorus of different songs) are for four players in two teams, while Medley (chorus of five different songs), Micro Medleys (short section of eight different songs) and First to the Post (whoever reaches a million points first wins) are for two players. Players can also hold tournaments.
