Description
At the start of the game, Tapp is immediately confronted with the task of removing a trap known as the "Reverse Bear Trap", a mechanism designed to go off and tear a human head apart. After removing the trap, he can wander through a mental health institution filled with obstacles such as shotgun doors, glass shards that cut Tapp's bare feet, and other victims of Jigsaw who are after Tapp because Jigsaw has hidden the key to their traps in his chest. Secrets surrounding the films must be uncovered, there are various characters to meet and it is possible to recreate the film sets.
Tapp's actions influence the outcome of the game. If he is not careful, innocent people will be killed in some traps, and some of those who wander through the halls are not violent. If he kills them, it affects the outcome of the game, as does Tapp's ability to rescue others from certain traps. The game has two endings, one positive and one negative. The positive ending is the only ending that belongs to the canon of the films, the negative ending is not canonical.
The player controls Tapp from a third-person perspective, and the game has a combat mechanism similar to that of Silent Hill: Homecoming. He can use various weapons found in the environments, but they break after being used a few times. Some enemies have traps that can affect their abilities; enemies with square traps on their heads cannot see but attack when they find you, while enemies with dynamite on their hands explode after death, which can damage you, and so on.
Traps can also be used against enemies; fuse boxes can be switched on above a pool of water and anyone who enters receives an electric shock, and later in the game the player can reset shotgun doors and hide from enemies. Over the course of the game, new types of traps can be found, as well as new weapons, light sources and even the ability to craft new traps or weapons from scrap in the institution. Some of the larger, more complex traps require Tapp to save both his own life and that of another person, and others force him to choose between his own life and that of the other. These traps are often presented as complex puzzles. The game rewards the player for finding clues and documents scattered throughout the asylum, and in many cases Tapp will not be able to escape a trap without the help of clues.
