Description
Some gameplay features have been changed compared to the classic title, such as the fact that the player is Robin Hood himself (rather than choosing one of the four throne pretenders), fully 3D graphics, a plot attached to the game, and the goal of being the first to reach and conquer King John's fortress in Cornwall. To do this, the player must build an army large enough to hold enough counties, which bring in money from taxes. This money can then be used to hire new troops (peasants, archers, footmen, and the powerful knights and catapults) or to pay King Richard's ransom, which allows loyal knights to be recruited.
As in the original game, the plot unfolds on a turn-based map of England, on which the player decides which actions to take: conquering a neighbouring county with Little John's army and hiring soldiers either for himself or to defend the territory, raiding a castle or a caravan, building fortresses, holding tournaments, or spying on the other lords with the help of Maid Marian's contacts at court. Each of the attack actions comes with a quick mini-game:
- The first mini-game to appear is the archer raid; in this mode, the player sees events directly through Robin Hood's eyes as he lies in wait in a tree. The goal is to use Robin's trusty bow and arrow to hit the mounted guards and the convoy as they pass by his position. Since some guards are also armed with a bow, Robin can also hide behind the tree trunk.
- When the player attacks a guarded area, the game switches to a strategic mode in which combat takes place on a three-lane field, and the goal is to defeat the opposing defence or force it to flee by launching direct attacks on each lane.
- In swordplay, the player faces one or more opponents depending on the settings. The goal is simple: slash everyone with blows and dodge/parry the opponent's strikes. During raids there is also a timer showing the time left before sunrise - if the player fails to escape or is killed before then, Robin is captured.
- Battles are fought in real time, with both armies placed on opposite sides of a multi-lane battlefield. The player chooses which lane to attack (or defend), and if successful, the opponent loses enough units to flee or simply awaits its death.
- The player can compete in a tournament for glory, and then for gold and land. To do this, he picks an opponent and starts building up enough speed to then knock him off his horse with a lance.
- Some areas are protected by castles, and to conquer them a siege must first be carried out. To do this, the player must load catapults and then destroy each wall of the fortress by throwing boulders at it. Each wall represents a part of the defending army: the more damage it inflicts, the easier it becomes to capture.
