Resistance 3 is a first-person shooter set in an alternate version of the 1950s. Earth is besieged by the Chimera species, which originally evolved from humans infected by a virus. Despite the measures taken by the Sentinels organisation in the previous instalments, almost nothing has changed. Four years later, humanity is still fighting for survival, but the resistance is too weak.

Joseph Capelli, who killed the protagonist of the first two Resistance games, was dishonourably discharged from SRPA service and now lives with his family in Haven, Oklahoma. During an attack, Capelli is contacted by Dr Fyodor Malikov with devastating news – due to a space wormhole above one of the Chimeran towers in New York, the world is continuously freezing over, meaning his family may not survive the winter. The only way to prevent the worst-case scenario is to destroy the wormhole. Joe and Malikov set off for New York.

Unlike the second game, the player can now use all weapon types, which have also been redesigned. All weapons, except for the sledgehammer, can be upgraded twice using experience points earned from kills with that weapon. The upgrades bring alternate fire modes, increased killing power, reduced ammo consumption, and so on. The health system has also been overhauled, as it must now be replenished using health packs dropped by enemies or found in the levels, rather than regenerating on its own.
