Description
Resistance 2 is a PS3-exclusive sci-fi first-person shooter and the sequel to the PlayStation 3 launch title Resistance: Fall of Man. The game is set in an alternate history around the year 1950, in which the alien species Chimera has taken over Russia and turned humans into super-powered soldiers. In the first title, protagonist Sgt. Nathan Hale, part of a US Ranger strike force, managed to stop the invasion of Britain, but the rest of Europe was overrun.
In the sequel, the Chimera have reached the United States and are threatening to invade. Nathan Hale, once again the lead character, is now part of the task force "The Sentinels", who captured him at the end of the first "Resistance". Like the other members fighting alongside him, he is infected with the Chimeran virus but can keep it under control with medication while making use of its powers.
Many of the weapons he can use were already present in the first game (redesigned versions of the Bullseye and Auger, for example), as a mix of 1950s human technology and alien materials, but the arsenal is expanded with weapons such as the Marksman and the HVAP Wraith mini-pistol. Unlike the first game, the number of weapons and grenades he can carry is limited, and since there's no visible health system, he can replenish himself by taking cover, a tactic also used in Call of Duty 4.
Multiplayer is offered in two variants: cooperative and competitive. In cooperative mode, the player can choose between three character classes (Special Ops, Soldier and Medic) and fight through a story with seven other players as the Specter Team, running parallel to the main campaign. Enemy strength changes depending on the players' abilities. New attributes can be unlocked and new armour acquired during play. Unlike the first game, there is no co-op mode in single-player. Competitive gameplay supports up to 60 players simultaneously across four main modes: Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Core Control (Capture the Flag) and Skirmish. Both humans and Chimera can be played, and in large battles, players are split into small squads to work towards objectives.
