Description
Resistance 2 is a PS3-exclusive sci-fi first-person shooter and the sequel to the PlayStation 3 launch title Resistance: Fall of Man. The game is set in an alternate history around the year 1950, in which the alien species Chimera has taken over Russia and turned humans into soldiers with superhuman powers. In the first title, the protagonist Sgt. Nathan Hale, part of a US Ranger task force, managed to stop the invasion of Great Britain, but the rest of Europe was overrun.
In the sequel, the Chimera have reached the United States and threaten to invade. Nathan Hale, once again the protagonist, is now part of the task force “The Sentinels”, who captured him at the end of the first “Resistance”. Just like the other members fighting alongside him, he's infected with the Chimeran virus, but can keep it under control with medication while taking advantage of the powers it grants.
Many of the weapons he can use were already present in the first game (redesigned versions of the Bullseye and Auger, for example), as a mix of 1950s human technology and alien materials, but the arsenal is expanded with weapons such as the Marksman and the HVAP Wraith mini-pistol. Unlike the first game, the number of weapons and grenades he can carry is limited, and since there's no visible health system, he can regenerate by taking cover, a tactic also used in Call of Duty 4.
Multiplayer is offered in two variants: cooperative and competitive. In co-op mode, the player can choose between three character classes (Special Ops, Soldier and Medic) and fight through a story alongside seven other players as the Specter Team, running parallel to the main campaign. Enemy strength adjusts based on the players' abilities. New attributes can be unlocked and new armour acquired throughout the game. Unlike the first game, there's no co-op mode within the single-player campaign. Competitive gameplay supports up to 60 players simultaneously across four main modes: Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Core Control (Capture the Flag) and Skirmish. Both humans and Chimera are playable, and in large battles players are split into small squads to work towards objectives. More
