Description
50 years after the events of the first two Red Faction games, Mars was liberated by the underhanded Ultor Corporation, and the E.D.F. (Earth Defense Force) stepped in to help the mining community get back on its feet. However, the E.D.F. has become an occupying force that has taken over the planet, executed citizens, and imposed martial law across the planet. In response, a new Red Faction element was formed to fight the E.D.F. and bring peace and freedom back to the Martian landscape. The player takes control of Alec Mason, a dissident who has recently arrived from Earth, hoping to build a new life on Mars with his brother Dan, only to be drawn into the revolution and tasked with freeing the five sectors of Mars (Parker, Badlands, Oasis, Free Fire Zone, and Eos) from E.D.F. control. To achieve this, the player must complete missions and destroy E.D.F. vehicles and property to reduce their control over each sector and boost the morale of the local population.
Missions range from story missions, whose purpose is to advance the plot, to other mission types such as Transporter (bringing specific vehicles back to a safehouse within a set time), Guerrilla Raid (where the player and a group of rebels attack and destroy an E.D.F. building), Heavy Metal (where the player creates a diversion allowing other rebels to complete a different mission without alerting the E.D.F.), Demolition Master (where the player must destroy a target within a set time limit and with a limited supply of ammunition), and House Arrest (where the player must rescue hostages and bring them back to a safehouse).
There are also missions that appear from time to time, such as Courier (where the player must track down and kill an enemy spy to gather the information they're carrying), Assault (where the player must defend a specific target against incoming E.D.F. troops), and Convoy (where the player must either destroy a series of vehicles or hijack a target vehicle and bring it back to a safehouse). Completing these missions causes the enemy to lose control of the area, raises citizen morale, and rewards the player with scrap while unlocking more advanced weapons. To liberate each district, the player must reduce E.D.F. control over the area to zero and complete the story missions. Once the player achieves this, a final story mission is unlocked that liberates that sector and unlocks story missions for the next one.
The player has a wide variety of vehicles at their disposal, ranging from cars and trucks to dune buggies and dump trucks, as well as tanks and APCs (Armored Personnel Carriers). There is also an abundance of weapons, including pistols, shotguns, assault rifles, the sledgehammer (the player's main weapon, which cannot be removed), remote mines, anti-personnel mines, rocket launchers, and the feared Nano Rifle (which fires a stream of nanobots capable of dissolving targets in an instant). The player can carry four different weapons at a time, which can be swapped out at safehouses or at the ammo crates scattered throughout the landscape. The most advanced weapons, such as the Nano Rifle, are only unlocked through story missions, while others can be found in E.D.F. buildings (such as the Singularity Mine), and every weapon can be upgraded via safehouses, which offer additional ammunition and increased firepower in exchange for scrap. Scrap is the game's currency, earned by completing missions or destroying E.D.F. buildings and vehicles.
The game also features an updated Geo-Mod 2.0 game engine, which allows the player to destroy a building virtually and realistically, for example by tilting it to the left by blowing up the left side of the building, or making it tilt forward when the façade is blown up. The player can use this to their advantage against enemies by destroying a building from the ground floor and bringing it down on enemies and vehicles, or by destroying the support structures of bridges with explosives so that they collapse on a convoy of enemies crossing them. There is also an offline two-player mode called Wrecking Crew, in which two friends take turns playing four different modes such as Barrel Dash, Total Chaos, Rampage, and Escalation, completing a set number of rounds to win an event. Online multiplayer games are also available, including Anarchy, Team Anarchy, Capture the Flag, Damage Control, Siege, and Demolition, for which players earn experience points that let them customise their online characters and acquire more advanced weapons. There are also backpacks for the Wrecking Crew and multiplayer modes that enhance the player's abilities, such as Jetpack, Stealth, Vision (essentially an X-ray view), and more powerful ones like Concussion, which knocks down nearby enemy players, and Tremor, which can damage both enemies and structures.
The PC game ships with the Demons of the Badlands DLC, which was previously only available for the Xbox 360 and PS3 consoles.
