Ratchet and Clank: Into the Nexus is a third-person action shooter with puzzle elements. It is shorter than earlier titles in the series and is intended as an epilogue to the "Future" subseries (Tools of Destruction, Quest for Booty and A Crack in Time). The game can also be used in conjunction with Before the Nexus.
After a notorious criminal named Vendra Prog escapes from prison with the help of her twin brother Neftin, Ratchet & Clank discover that the twins have created their own Dimensionator. In doing so, the twins brought creatures through a portal called Nethers, which are controlled by a leader named Mr. Eye.
In the game, the player mainly controls Ratchet, who uses a range of weapons and gadgets known from the series, but also some newer ones. Ratchet is supported by Clank in his movements by using the Heli-Pack to move forward or hover safely on the ground. The Heli-Pack can later be upgraded to a Jetpack.
In certain sections of the game, the player takes control of Clank in side-scroller-like journeys through the Netherverse. In these sections, Clank must manipulate gravity and solve puzzles to bring the Nether back to the portal to trigger an "earthquake" and destroy the barrier blocking the duo's path.
Ratchet levels up when he defeats enemies and gains more health points. Weapons can be upgraded through normal use (automatically collecting Nanomites from fallen enemies) and through the use of Raritanium (a rare mineral found in the universe). Upgradeable armours (which can be purchased from vendors), skill points, cheats and gold bolts have returned from previous games.
