Description
From the suspension and the engine to the shape and colour of the handlebars, there are many options to choose from. By playing through the heart of the game, the World Tour single-player campaign, the player unlocks additional parts by winning events and collecting the flag hidden on the track. Some parts are purely cosmetic and don't change the bike's stats, while others have a major impact and are available as freestyle or racing versions. The choice of which parts to use has a big influence on how the quad bike behaves in terms of speed or how easily the player can perform tricks on it. Since the player also unlocks extra space in their garage, they can build the perfect quad bike for each of the available game modes (Race, Sprint, Freestyle). This is especially important once the race has started, as boost management comes into play.
Every trick the player performs gives them more or less boost, depending on how well it was executed and other factors. This boost can then be used to give the quad bike a temporary speed advantage. At the same time, the amount of boost collected also determines which tricks can be performed. At the start of the race, only simple tricks are available to the rider, and as boost increases, they unlock first advanced and then professional tricks. The player therefore has to decide whether to perform more difficult tricks and gain more boost with a single trick, or sacrifice that ability for a brief speed advantage.
While the Race and Sprint game modes are simply races in which whoever is in first place at the end wins, placement doesn't matter in Freestyle. Instead, the player has to perform tricks to score points. Once a trick has been successfully performed, a timer starts, and if the player performs another trick before it runs out, the multiplier increases. There are also power-ups scattered across the map that let the player perform a special trick, double their points or top up their fuel a little. The latter in particular is important, since the race continues until the player runs out of fuel. Once everyone is out of fuel, whoever has the most points wins.
