Description
Prototype 2 is an action game set in an open world and is the sequel to Prototype. At the end of the first game, protagonist Alex Mercer managed to destroy the Blacklight virus that had infected him and given him strange powers, but he was believed dead. Fourteen months later, however, New York City is struck by another outbreak. It is the third outbreak in the city's history, and the city is renamed New York Zero. The protagonist of this game is James Heller, a sergeant on a tour of duty in Iraq who receives calls from his wife Colette. She fears for her safety and that of their daughter Amaya as new reports of an outbreak come in. Mutated humans and creatures once again roam the streets, and the organisation Blackwatch reappears to violently contain the outbreak. When Heller returns home, he discovers that both are dead, and he re-enlists in the army to fight the so-called Mercer virus, since Alex Mercer appears in this game for the first time as an antagonist. Soon, however, Heller is also infected by a strand of the virus and gains the same powers as Mercer. He is taken in by Gentek for testing, but eventually manages to escape and flees to Mercer, who explains to him that Blackwatch and Gentek are truly behind the virus. After the introduction, the main game begins the moment Heller decides to pursue Gentek, while staying in contact with a priest named Guerra.

The game is set in New York Zero, which has been divided into three zones according to infection rate: red, yellow and green. This means there are also areas where Heller can move freely among the normal civilian population, as long as he does not display his powers. There is a main storyline with quests, but also a great deal of freedom for exploration. Eventually, he can hack into the military Blacknet, in which all military operations are stored. From there, he can choose his own missions to pursue the organisation instead of completing quests.

Just as in the original game, Heller has supernatural powers that allow him to sprint on buildings, make huge jumps and land without taking fall damage. He can perform various combat manoeuvres with his fists and claws, and pick up objects and people to hurl them at enemies. He can also tear a cannon off a tank and use it as a weapon. Tanks can also be driven. Grabbing enemies now starts a brief combat sequence and can be used for intimidation, optionally followed by throwing or consuming a character. Just as easily, he can infect characters with the virus to turn them into a biobomb. Also known from the first game is the shapeshifting ability, which allows him to take over a person's body and memories. If he does this without being seen, he can shake off pursuers, temporarily take on the role of a soldier and use weapons, or use this ability for infiltration. Heller has new evasive manoeuvres, heals himself and gains stamina over time, and can access a sonar sense that highlights buildings or people to make them easier to track down. The environment can also be viewed via a top-down map. Heller's abilities are further defined throughout the game through various upgrades that grant him new powers. They are divided into four categories (Powers, Skills, Abilities, Mutations) and an overall development level based on experience. A whole new range of powers comes from tendrils that sprout from Heller's arm and can be used for various purposes.
