Description
In 2012, a seemingly ordinary bartender named Desmond Miles is kidnapped by a mysterious organisation. The kidnappers hook Desmond up to a strange device called the "Animus," which allows him to access the memories of his ancestor, an assassin named Altaïr. For some reason, reconstructing Altaïr's memories is vital to the kidnappers.

After accessing Altaïr's memories, Desmond is able to experience the events that took place in the Holy Land in 1191, during the Third Crusade. Al Mualim, the leader of the Assassins, orders Altaïr to kill nine prominent historical figures who are said to have brought war and corruption to the Holy Land.

For most of the game, the player controls Altaïr; however, it is made clear that controlling him is part of Desmond's experience. The player can also control Desmond between his sessions in the "Animus".

The game's most innovative feature is the freedom of choice and movement. Every architectural detail, such as window ledges, stone carvings or wooden beams, can be used to move along walls. This gives the player intense chase scenes whenever he happens to be pursued by guards.

There are several ways to reach your target in the game. By eavesdropping, interrogating and pickpocketing, you can find out information about your next target. Using this information, you can then decide whether to attack your targets head-on or with a well-placed throwing knife from the cover of the rooftops.

Depending on your choices, you'll have to deal with the citizens and knights of the cities, who become suspicious when a disguised person lingers on rooftops or near mission targets. There are several situations in which you can blend into the crowd, and with a bit of luck you can take out your target without anyone looking your way. Altaïr has a small but effective arsenal of weapons, such as swords and throwing knives, and he can learn new combat skills that help him with his mission.
