Description
Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare is an online-only, class-based third-person shooter with a tongue-in-cheek take on modern shooters, as suggested by the title, which references the Modern Warfare series. Although the game is set in the Plants vs. Zombies universe, it departs heavily from the tower defense genre, instead putting players in the shoes (or roots) of either zombies or plants in total war.

Each side has four different classes with their own unique abilities and strengths:

PLANTSPeashooter:* Very fast and agile, and can take moderate damage. Its abilities include the ability to root in place and unleash a stream of peas at opponents, the ability to run and jump at incredible speed, and a chili bean bomb that can wipe out any enemy within the blast radius.
  • Sunflower: The team's medic, she has lower firepower and armour, but can quickly revive any downed ally and use a healing beam that restores health rapidly. Other abilities include the ability to root in place and unleash a beam of concentrated sunlight to damage opponents, and the ability to drop a potted healing plant that can heal all allies within its radius.

  • Cactus: They are the team's snipers, firing needles at medium to long range and can also release drones that rain corn strikes down on opponents, barriers to slow down zombies, and potato mines that quickly defeat anyone foolish enough to step on them.

  • Chomper: Slow and cumbersome, but they can quickly defeat opponents by biting them from behind and swallowing them whole. This leaves them vulnerable, however, until they've digested their prey. They can also burrow underground to launch a surprise attack, and set vine traps that swallow anyone who steps into them. ZOMBIESSoldier:* The all-round class, they can use a rocket to jump to higher places like cliffs and rooftops, throw zombie stink clouds that disorient and damage plants caught inside them, and a ZPG that causes devastation, especially against rooted plants.

  • Scientist: The zombies' medic can use healing stations to restore health and can quickly revive downed allies. They can also use warp abilities to quickly get out of trouble, and a sticky bomb they can use to set traps for wayward plants.

  • Engineer: Although a little slower, they can use a jackhammer ability to quickly traverse the battlefield, and build teleporters scattered across select modes to help zombie allies advance faster. They also have sonic grenades to stun plants and quickly flush out Chompers burrowed underground, and can deploy a zombie drone to carry out traffic cone strikes.

  • All-Star: The heaviest of all the zombies, he can take and deal much more damage, but is also a bit slower. All-Stars can deploy shields that can absorb damage, and use Imp punts to take out groups of plants, as well as a sprint tackle that can take out opponents in his path.

There are also various variations of each class, which give them different weapons and the ability to have elemental damaging effects, as well as an alternative version of their abilities that can be used more often but are less effective than their default abilities. Players can unlock these classes and abilities by completing matches and challenges and earning coins to buy card packs, which can be opened to unlock these abilities and classes, as well as AI reinforcements that players can summon in certain modes, and new costume pieces that can be used to customise the plant/zombie.

There's a 4-player co-op mode called Garden Ops (another nod to Modern Warfare's Spec Ops), in which up to four friends or strangers team up to defend their garden against 10 waves of AI zombies. After the fifth and tenth waves, players face a boss fight determined by a slot machine that can produce several generic zombies, but also stronger boss zombies that can take much more damage.

The other modes are competitive and include:

  • Welcome Mat: A basic team deathmatch in which players start with their default classes and abilities and receive a health boost each time they're defeated.
  • Team Vanquish: A standard team deathmatch where the team with 50 vanquishes wins the match.
  • Gardens & Graveyards: A mode in which plants defend gardens against zombies, with the goal of keeping the zombies within a set area around the garden. If the zombies are outnumbered, err, outnumber the plants, they can quickly turn the garden into a graveyard. If they do this before the time limit runs out, the timer increases and unlocks the next area, until the areas are captured or the plants can hold off the zombies for a set amount of time.
  • Classic Team Vanquish: Team deathmatch, but with default classes and abilities.
  • Classic Gardens & Graveyards: The same mode, but with default classes and abilities.
  • Mixed Mode: A mix of modes and maps that cycle randomly.

Later updates brought new class variations and maps, as well as other game modes:

  • Gnome Bomb: In this mode, a gnome fitted with a bomb is placed either on the plants' gardens or the zombies' gravestones. If not defused, they destroy the bomb, and so it continues until either time runs out or one side blows up all three areas.
  • Vanquished Confirmed!: A variant of Kill Confirmed, in which players only score points by collecting orbs dropped by defeated players.
  • Suburbination: Another variant of the Call of Duty mode "Domination", in which players capture three different points, whose control causes the opposing team to lose points faster.
  • Taco Bandits: Here, the plants must defend their taco stand from marauding zombies who want to grab the tacos and bring them back to their base. The game ends when time runs out or when the zombies bring back a taco three times.

Since the game can only be played online, Xbox 360 and Xbox One owners need a Gold membership to play the game. PC players also need an EA Origin account to play.
