Description
Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare is an online-only, class-based third-person shooter with a tongue-in-cheek take on modern shooters, as the title suggests, referencing the Modern Warfare series. Although the game is set in the Plants vs. Zombies universe, it strays far from the tower defense genre, instead putting players in the shoes (or roots) of either Zombies or Plants in all-out war.

Each side has four different classes, each with their own unique abilities and strengths:

PLANTSPeashooter:* Very fast and agile, and able to take moderate damage. Their abilities include the ability to root themselves in place and unleash a stream of peas at their enemies, the ability to run and jump with incredible speed, and a Chili Bean Bomb that can wipe out any enemy within the blast radius.
  • Sunflower: The team's medic, with lower firepower and armour, but able to quickly revive any fallen ally and use a Heal Beam that restores health rapidly. Other abilities include the ability to put down roots and unleash a beam of concentrated sunlight to damage enemies, and the ability to drop a potted Heal Flower that can heal all allies within its radius.

  • Cactus: They're the team's snipers, firing needles at medium to long range, and can also deploy drones that rain corn strikes down on enemies, barriers to slow Zombies down, and Spud Mines that quickly take out anyone foolish enough to step on them.

  • Chomper: They're slow and cumbersome, but can quickly defeat enemies by biting them from behind and swallowing them whole. This leaves them vulnerable, however, until they've digested their prey. They can also burrow underground to launch a surprise attack, and set Vine Traps that swallow anyone who steps in them. ZOMBIESSoldier:* The all-round class, able to use a rocket to jump up to higher places such as cliffs and rooftops, throw Zombie Stink Clouds to disorient and damage any plants caught inside them, and fire a ZPG that wreaks havoc, especially on rooted plants.

  • Scientist: The Zombies' medic can use Healing Stations to restore health and can quickly revive downed allies. They can also use warp abilities to quickly get out of tricky situations, and use a sticky bomb to set traps for wayward plants.

  • Engineer: Although somewhat slower, they can use a jackhammer ability to quickly cross the battlefield, and build teleporters scattered across select modes to help Zombie allies advance faster. They also have sonic grenades that can stun plants and quickly flush out burrowed Chompers, and can deploy a Zombie drone to carry out traffic cone strikes.

  • All-Star: The heaviest of all the Zombies, able to take and deal much more damage, but also a bit slower. All-Stars can use shields that absorb damage, and Imp Punts to take out groups of plants, as well as a Sprint Tackle that can take down enemies standing in his way.

There are also various variants of each class, giving them different weapons and the ability to deal elemental damage effects, as well as an alternative version of their abilities that can be used more often, but are less effective than their standard abilities. Players can unlock these classes and abilities by completing games and challenges and earning coins to buy card packs, which can be opened to unlock these abilities and classes, as well as AI reinforcements that players can summon in certain modes, and new costume parts to customise their plant/zombie.

There's a 4-player co-op mode called Garden Ops (another nod to Modern Warfare's Spec Ops), in which up to four friends or strangers can team up to defend their garden against 10 waves of A.I. zombies. After the fifth and tenth waves, players face a boss fight determined by a slot machine that can produce several generic zombies, but also tougher boss zombies that can take much more damage.

The other modes are competitive and include:

  • Welcome Mat: A basic team deathmatch in which players start with their default classes and abilities and gain a health boost each time they're defeated.
  • Team Vanquish: A standard team deathmatch in which the team with 50 vanquishes wins the match.
  • Gardens & Graveyards: A mode in which plants defend gardens against zombies, with the aim of keeping the zombies within a predetermined area around the garden. If the zombies gain the upper hand, they can quickly turn the garden into a graveyard. If they do so before the time limit runs out, the timer increases and unlocks the next area, until the areas are conquered or the plants manage to hold the zombies off for a set amount of time.
  • Classic Team Vanquish: Team deathmatch, but with default classes and abilities.
  • Classic Gardens & Graveyards: The same mode, but with default classes and abilities.
  • Mixed Mode: A mix of modes and maps cycled through at random.

Later updates brought new class variants and maps, as well as other game modes:

  • Gnome Bomb: In this mode, a gnome fitted with a bomb is placed either on the plants' gardens or the zombies' gravestones. If it isn't defused, the bomb goes off, and this continues until either time runs out or one side blows up all three areas.
  • Vanquished Confirmed!: A variant of Kill Confirmed, in which players only score points by collecting the orbs dropped by defeated players.
  • Suburbination: Another variant of the Call of Duty mode "Domination", in which players fight over three different points, controlling them makes the opposing team lose faster.
  • Taco Bandits: Here, the plants must defend their taco stand from marauding zombies who want to grab the tacos and bring them back to their base. The game ends when time runs out or when the zombies bring back a taco three times.

Since the game can only be played online, Xbox 360 and Xbox One owners need a Gold membership to play it. PC players also need an EA Origin account to be able to play.
