Description
Heavy Fire: Afghanistan is a first-person shooter set during the US deployment in Afghanistan in 2011. The player controls soldier Will through twelve missions, aiming a crosshair on screen. Movement can't be controlled; the game progresses automatically or pans across once all enemies in a given scene have been defeated. Will uses a standard machine gun and has a limited number of grenades. The weapon must be reloaded regularly. Enemies must be taken out quickly before they can get him in their sights, which is indicated by a red exclamation mark above their heads. If they hit Will, a cracked-glass effect appears on screen. In most sequences, other soldiers from his squad fight alongside him, and Will must avoid friendly fire. There are also a few hostage sequences that require careful aiming.

In almost every scene there's a cover system that lets you partially hide from enemies, with up to three cover positions. There are also some quick-time events for jumping or dodging obstacles. Bonuses can be shot out of the environment, such as extra ammo, more grenades or health. If the player dies, they can choose whether to repeat the entire mission or continue from the last checkpoint. The game tracks the score and rewards accuracy and headshots. It's possible to shoot at various objects in the environment, as well as explosive barrels and gas canisters. Alongside the main missions, there are also a few target practice scenes. In some missions, you shoot from inside a tank or a helicopter, with different types of missions available. There are also a few short sequences in which Will mans a machine-gun post. In the alternative scenes there's unlimited ammo, but you can't fire continuously, or the gun will overheat. Instead of grenades, rockets are fired from the helicopter or the tank. Finally, there are short sequences in which Will uses a bazooka to take out helicopters. When ammo runs out, Will switches to a handgun.

The score is used to reach a new rank and unlock perks in the armoury's skill tree, which affect health, ammo capacity and grenade storage, among other things. The game can be played co-operatively with up to four players, each controlling a crosshair on the same screen. Once all missions are complete, they can be replayed in a tougher veteran mode. More
