Description
The game begins with the player choosing which of the four Hogwarts school teams they want to play for. After a few tutorial events, they are sent into the competition for the Hogwarts Cup against the other three teams. If the player wins matches and completes certain tasks (e.g. "score 120 points in one match"), they collect Quidditch cards that unlock special combination options. Once a player has won the school championship, they can play as one of nine international teams to compete for the Quidditch World Cup, with each team having its own style and special combination options. Having won the cup once, players can still collect further cards by playing as and winning with different teams.
Anyone familiar with the sport knows that the rules of Quidditch (as described in Rowling's books) are fundamentally flawed and that the only meaningful part of the game is the 1-on-1 contest between the two seekers trying to catch the golden snitch. In Quidditch World Cup, this problem is mitigated by the "Golden Snitch Bar". Over the course of the match, a progress bar for the team is built up by executing action combos and special moves. When the snitch eventually appears, the team with the better position on the bar has an advantage in the chase. Ironically, this system rewards things other than actually scoring goals, so goals remain largely meaningless in the game (except at lower difficulty levels, where it's very easy to build a lead of 160+ points and render the snitch meaningless).
Since Quidditch World Cup is designed for a younger audience, most of the advanced features you'd expect from an EA Sports game are missing (league play, team management, etc.). It also lacks any multiplayer options, apart from two-player exhibition matches (on the same machine).
