Description
Guitar Hero: Metallica is, after Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, the second game in the Guitar Hero series to focus on a specific band. The title largely builds on the innovations introduced in Guitar Hero: World Tour, featuring single- and multiplayer band career modes with a cartoon-style story, online competitive modes, and the ability to play with various instruments such as a standard guitar, a bass guitar, drums and vocals. The story describes how a band wants to follow in Metallica's footsteps and become one of the main acts on their tour. This edition includes an Expert+ difficulty mode, in which players must drum using a second bass pedal to emulate the playing style of Lars Ulrich, the band's drummer. The band members also took part in motion-capture sessions for the in-game avatars.
The song selection consists of 28 master recordings and 21 additional songs by other artists, chosen by the band. Bonus features include various videos and trivia about the songs. Progress is made by completing song sets rather than a series of performances as in Guitar Hero: World Tour, taking place at locations significant to the band's career. Performances are rated with stars, and a certain number is required to progress and unlock a new set.
The game also includes GHTunes from World Tour, where new songs can be created and shared. A new Drum mode offers the ability to play drums without an existing drum track, to create new rhythms, and Battle mode (from Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock) has been updated with Metallica-inspired power-ups, with names like Fade To Black, Under The Ice and Ride The Lightning.
Although released in Europe bundled with a guitar controller and a Metallica faceplate, other regions weren't so lucky and only received a solus edition. Custom drumsticks and a second bass pedal were offered as a pre-order bonus at certain stores.
