Description
Guitar Hero 5 is the fifth main instalment in the music rhythm series. Similar to its predecessor, Guitar Hero: World Tour, the focus is on a band experience with lead and bass guitar, drums and vocals. The title is available separately or bundled with the instruments.
Alongside a new soundtrack featuring 85 songs, many animated lead singers are now modelled on famous musicians such as Johnny Cash, Carlos Santana, Shirley Manson, Kurt Cobain and Matthew Bellamy. Players can still compose their own songs in the included studio, and the game relies heavily on downloadable content, in the form of individual tracks and full albums. Some songs from Guitar Hero: World Tour, Guitar Hero Smash Hits and Band Hero can be imported for a small fee per song.
In the band lobby, players can put together a group of local and other players to form a band, play career mode, or opt for Quickplay. Most competitive multiplayer modes are carried over from previous versions, along with two new ones: Party Play (random song selection with the option to join and leave with any instrument at will) and RockFest, a band mode for up to four (local) or up to eight (online) players with various sub-modes. Songs are divided into smaller sections, and for each section players are rewarded based on various conditions.
Among the general new features introduced to the gameplay is drop-in/drop-out play, which lets you join a song midway through or pause the game without interrupting gameplay. There's also a new "Challenges" section in career mode.
The various game versions are identical, with the exception of the PS2 version, which lacks online game modes and downloadable content, drop-in/drop-out play and song challenges. It's also limited to two instruments and doesn't support the multitap. The Wii version is very similar to the major console versions, including downloadable content on SD cards, multiplayer via the global Wii address book, and the Mii freestyle mode from the previous game. It also supports interaction with the Nintendo DS for editing videos and provides access to the Roadie Battle mode, similar to the main battle mode from Guitar Hero III, in which players complete mini-games on the Nintendo DS to sabotage players on the console.
