Gran Turismo 5 is the sixth instalment of Sony's flagship racing franchise, developed by Polyphony Digital. The game is the successor to the PS2 title Gran Turismo 4 and the full version of Gran Turismo 5: Prologue.
GT5 comes packed with many new features and improvements. The game includes more than 1,000 licensed cars and more than 20 tracks. 200 of these cars are known as Premium models, featuring a completely redesigned interior and full mechanical and body damage. For the first time, the Gran Turismo series includes the famous car brands Ferrari, Bugatti and Lamborghini. Through special events, players can take part in racing series such as NASCAR, WRC, Super GT and even kart racing. Players can learn from NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon how to race at the Daytona International Speedway, or even learn how to successfully navigate the complex Nürburgring circuit. The A-Spec and B-Spec game modes return as the main single-player modes. In A-Spec, players can complete a range of different races, for which they need specific cars. The series starts at simple beginner levels, where races can last 5 minutes, all the way up to Endurance levels, where races can last between 3 and 24 hours. In B-Spec mode, players take on the role of the racing crew chief and instruct their driver to slow down or overtake an opponent during the race.
The game features a completely new vehicle physics and graphics engine, which allows cars to display damage and wear in real time. Damage modelling increases as the player levels up in A-Spec game mode. Graphical improvements include tyre smoke, sparks, brake marks and dirt build-up on the cars (which can be washed off at the car wash). Dynamic weather makes itself felt for the first time, as races can be driven not only in pouring rain but also under a blanket of snow. This is paired with a day-and-night cycle that can be observed during longer races.
Your cars in the game can also be upgraded at the tuning shop. Things like weight reduction, turbo kits and a fully customisable transmission can be installed to improve a car.
Players can team up with friends and play in the new online mode. With unlocked cars, the player can race in a public lobby with up to 16 players or create their own private lobby with up to 32 players. You can also share photos taken in photo mode with friends and let them drive your personally tuned cars in their own game. Tracks created in the Course Maker can also be shared.
Seasonal events were added with Patch 1.05 and are a series of special races added every two weeks. Some are one-make races with strict tuning limits, others are time trial and drift races in which the player competes against the rest of the world. A special online dealership offers a selection of unusual standard cars, which are updated together with the seasonal events, and is usually a good place to find a car for them. From Patch 1.10, seasonal events also feature helmets and racing suits that the player or B-Spec driver can wear to change their appearance.
Gran Turismo 5 is compatible with Gran Turismo. Cars obtained in the PSP game can be uploaded and used in GT5's Arcade mode.
