Description
Final Fantasy XII is set in Ivalice, a fantasy world that also served as the setting for Final Fantasy Tactics. The game differs from its predecessors in several key gameplay aspects. The game world consists of expansive areas with visible, roaming enemies. There are no separate battle screens in the game; combat takes place in the same environment as exploration. Player-controlled characters can move freely during combat. Actions are still selected by choosing commands from a pop-up menu, and each character has a traditional ATB gauge that determines when they may act; overall, however, combat resembles the "real-time with pause" system of Western role-playing games such as Knights of the Old Republic.
The player can give party members specific commands or assign them combat strategies (called "gambits" in the game). New magic, abilities, and equipment are purchased in shops or found in containers throughout the world. Before a character can use one of these abilities, the player must acquire a corresponding licence by spending licence points earned in battle. These function like skill points and can be manually assigned by the player on the character's licence board.
In addition to the enemies and bosses encountered by following the story, the player can also accept "hunts", which are posted in bars or offered to the player in conversations. These are optional encounters in which the player must track down a very powerful monster and either lure it into a trap or attract it before defeating it. More
