Description
Following Euro 2004, FIFA 2005 introduces several new features to the franchise, such as the return of a player creation tool that allows a player to be created from scratch by adjusting facial features (while it is not possible to define the texture as in previous EA Sports games like NHL 2000, the player can adjust facial features such as the shape of the eyes or cheeks, similar to RPGs like Neverwinter Nights), as well as accessories and player skills. It is also possible to create all types of competitions. The career mode has also been expanded and now allows up to 15 seasons and gives the player the ability to turn the tide in a simulated match at any time. This mode is a "light" manager mode in which the player not only plays but also signs new players and improves the club's abilities in terms of coaching staff, medical personnel and other club staff.
The most important gameplay change was the introduction of "First Touch" control. By executing one of the "trick" moves before the player gains possession of the ball, it is possible to perform a series of moves, such as touching the ball forward to gain a few metres ahead of the defenders, or touching the ball to one side and rolling to the other side of an attacking defender, then picking up the ball a bit further ahead and outwitting the opponent. There is also a move in which strikers can outmanoeuvre the goalkeeper before shooting for goal, or force defenders away from their positions, creating space for a pass or a run at goal. Other aspects of the game, such as "Off The Ball" control (allowing control of players not in possession of the ball to bring them into an open position), remain unchanged.
Another new feature is the FIFA Shop, in which the player can exchange points earned in various ways, from simple tasks like browsing the jukebox to achieving 10 consecutive wins in career mode, for various items such as third kits, additional music, more balls and night stadiums.
As usual with the series, the game features 18 leagues and 38 national teams (some of which are equipped with generic shirts and logos due to licensing issues), for a total of around 11,000 real footballers.
