Description
ESPN NHL 2K5 is the second ice hockey game to make use of Sega's partnership with the world's leading sports network, ESPN.
As with every sports game, there are the standard game modes. 2K5 has a significantly improved franchise mode compared to last year's game. In addition to the email system that was introduced, you have the option of hiring several coaches. You can choose a head coach, an offensive coach, a defensive coach, a scouting coach, a goaltending coach and more. When it's time to sign and release players, you use real money rather than points to negotiate contracts.
There are also a few special game modes. You have access to the skills mode, which was also found in last year's game. You can choose between accuracy shooting, puck control, hardest shot, fastest skater and a few others. There is also a party mode for one to four players (you and your friends, or you and the computer) in which you play fast-paced mini-games. One example is a "free-for-all" game where you have to grab the puck and shoot it into the net while the constantly moving slag wall blocking the net is down.
Like last year's game, 2K5 also offers multiplayer ice hockey via Xbox Live (Xbox) and the PlayStation 2 network service. You can join a game or create or join a league with friends and opponents.
The Skybox is back and has been slightly improved. As in ESPN NFL 2K5, you earn points by completing tasks, e.g. scoring five goals in a period, winning ten faceoffs and so on. With these points you can then buy unlockables that decorate your Skybox or let you play as a special team. You can also unlock retro jerseys. As soon as you win a trophy, it is added to your Skybox, with the Stanley Cup taking centre stage. There are three mini-games you can play from your Skybox: air hockey, shuffleboard and a trivia machine.
For those who own an Xbox, there is the option to import the music from their hard drive and set songs (or parts of songs) to play for various events. For example, you can choose Ozzy Osbourne's "Crazy Train" for the stadium intro, something uplifting for scoring, or something insulting for being scored on. If you like to put in extra effort, you can even set different events per stadium. So if you want to play "Crazy Train" for the stadium intro in Anaheim but "Dragula" in Detroit, you can do that.
