Description
The Dragon Crown is a legendary artefact that allows its bearer to control any dragon. The King of Hydeland is obsessed with it, and many adventurers have set out to find it. The game is set in a medieval fantasy world and features 2D graphics with 3D depth. It has an exaggerated anatomy (e.g. large bouncy breasts and wide hips on women and exaggerated muscles leading to a V-shape on male warriors, etc.) aesthetic. Rather than conducting dialogue, the entire story of the game is told through narration. The player controls a character selected from one of six classes: Amazon, Fighter, Elf, Dwarf, Wizard and Sorceress. The characters have some customisation options: name, colour palette, language, and the player can enter text to create sentences that characters say when selected, when they meet another player, are defeated or come back to life. Each class has its own abilities and equipment. Some of these classes, such as the Dwarf and Sorceress, are designed for more experienced players. The town serves as a hub from which various areas such as the Temple, Adventurer's Guild and Castle can be reached for different purposes. When leaving the town, you enter the exterior of Hydeland, where you can enter various levels where the player fights hordes of enemies in side-scrolling action until the area's boss is defeated. After traversing a dungeon, there is loot and experience as a reward. The loot must be identified in Morgan's shop for magical items before it can be equipped. Further locations, both in the town and beyond, are unlocked as the story progresses. To go on quests, the player can be accompanied by up to three other adventurers, who can be controlled by AI or by other players, both online and offline. An additional character, a rogue named Rannie, follows the adventurers in dungeons and helps with locked doors, chests and items hidden in the background. Sometimes the player stumbles upon a pile of bones. These remains of fallen adventurers can be brought to the Temple of Canaan to be revived or buried. The revived adventurers are the NPCs who accompany the player and can be selected at the Dragon's Haven Inn. They must be reselected before each quest. The main plot involves collecting talismans that allow the hero to become strong enough to fight an ancient dragon. Once the dragon is defeated, a new difficulty level is unlocked. In harder modes, the character's level cap is higher and all talisman quests must be repeated to fight an even stronger dragon. Defeating the dragon in each difficulty level restores one of the Goddess statues. In the Adventurer's Guild, quests can be undertaken. These quests grant experience and financial rewards, as well as artwork that is displayed in the game's gallery. Quests are completed by meeting certain requirements whilst revisiting completed dungeons. The Guild is also where the player learns new skills and views the gallery. Whilst save files can be transferred between PS3 and PSVita and vice versa, the game did not originally support cross-platform play. However, the feature was added through an update.
