In Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin, you control two characters, a vampire hunter named Jonathan Morris and a young witch, Charlotte Aulin. The two heroes must stop Brauner, a vampire artist plotting to draw power from Dracula's castle using magical paintings. In addition to Brauner's castle, you can explore environments such as Egyptian deserts and otherworldly fairgrounds via the paintings Brauner has placed around the castle. A mysterious spirit named Wind offers rewards if the two heroes are willing to complete tasks for him, such as finding rare monsters or mastering abilities. During the game you can switch freely between Jonathan and Charlotte, deciding which character is best suited to fighting the vampire army. Both characters have unique lists of armour and weapons they can equip; whips for Jonathan and spellbooks for Charlotte. Charlotte can find many different kinds of spells in Brauner's castle and within the paintings, including magic attacks, shapeshifting spells and buffs that affect both Jonathan and herself. Similarly, Jonathan can find items that function like the sub-weapons of earlier Castlevania games, although he can now choose which one to use from a menu, and each weapon becomes more powerful the more it is used. Both characters can also combine their powers for a very powerful Dual Crush, which consumes a lot of mana. In addition, for the first time in the series, both characters can be on screen at the same time and help each other out. Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin also includes a Wi-Fi and wireless co-operative multiplayer mode, in which two players go head to head within a time limit to complete set challenges. Players can also set up a shop over Wi-Fi or wirelessly and sell their items to other players.
