Description
Modern Warfare 3 is the eighth main entry in the Call of Duty series and the third instalment in the Modern Warfare sub-series, serving as a direct sequel to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. In this first-person shooter, the story only picks up pace towards the end of the previous game, as the Russian invasion of the United States continues, but the war has now spread to Europe, where the United Kingdom, France and Germany join as allies of the US. Over the course of the campaign, the player once again takes on the role of several characters, including 'Soap' MacTavish from the previous game, as well as several new ones, including Frost and Sandman, members of the US Delta Force.
Alongside the main story campaign with scripted gameplay, MW3 offers two co-op modes. The first is Spec Ops, marking a return from the previous game. Here, players must complete short missions and are awarded a star for their performance. The second is the new Survival mode, in which players fight against increasingly difficult waves of enemy soldiers.
The multiplayer portion features the usual game modes (Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, and so on). Several new game modes have also been added. The first is called 'Kill Confirmed' and requires the player to retrieve the dog tags of defeated enemies for the kill to register. The opposing team can also retrieve them to deny the player's kill. In another mode, Team Defender, teams must capture a single flag on the map and hold onto it for as long as possible to score the most points. There are also several preset modes for private matches, such as 'Infection' (kill enemies to recruit them), 'Drop Zone' (hold a zone for points and care packages), 'Team Juggernaut' (each team has an AI Juggernaut character) and 'Gun Game' (each player starts with only a pistol and three bullets and earns extra weapons and bullets through kills).
The Killstreak reward system from previous games' multiplayer mode has been dropped in favour of the new Pointstreak system. Points are earned by completing additional challenges, not just by getting kills. Rewards are organised into three strike packages: Assault, Support and Specialist, each offering new options and perks as they're unlocked.
Alongside this game, the Call of Duty: Elite service is introduced – a service that tracks player statistics and includes social network and smartphone integration. It's free, but subscribers paying a monthly fee receive DLC and can enter competitions to win prizes. It also integrates with the earlier Call of Duty: Black Ops.
